The World Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play has five new members. Halo: Combat Evolved, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter II, and Pokemon Red and Green will be joining the likes of DOOM, Pac-Man, and Sonic the Hedgehog. The Strong, located in Rochester, NY, allows fans to nominate influential games that meet certain criteria such as icon-status and influence. This year’s inductees certainly fit the bill with Halo and Street Fighter still standing tall among their peers and maintaining a strong following (though both struggled with their respective 5th entries).
Almost as impressive is the list of games they beat. I have a personal level of disappointment with the fact that Final Fantasy VII (an all-time favorite of mine) didn’t make the cut. That list also includes the likes of Microsoft Windows Solitaire, Portal, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Wii Sports, Myst, and Mortal Kombat. While those games will undoubtedly make it in someday, it will be interesting to see what other games get nominated in 2018 and beyond.
You can make your own nomination here and have a shot at your favorite game making the cut. Ross and I put together a small list of games we would nominate, check them out below:
Twisted Metal 2
StarCraft: Brood War
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
