Nindie Direct Spring 2019 Showcase

An Overall Strong Showing...

The Spring 2019 showcase for upcoming indie games coming to the Nintendo Switch has come and gone. Overall, I was excited by a few of the games they showed in the 30 minute presentation. I’m going to run down the announcements below for those wanting everything in one place.

  • Cuphead is coming to the Switch on April 18th. While the gameplay is not my “cup” of tea (I sincerely apologize) it will be perfect for the Switch.
  • Overland will be coming out this fall. It comes from the developers of Canabalt (the only endless runner I’ve gotten into). However, this is a squad-based survival game with procedurally generated levels in the post-apocalypse. There does seem to be a bit of a management sim when it comes to resources as well as a “choose your path” ala Outrun or FTL. Lastly, there also seems to be some X-Com-esque combat as well. Looks good.
  • My Friend Pedro will come out in June and is a console exclusive for the Switch. It’s a stylistic 2D run and gun game with some slow-mo backflips.
  • Neo Cab may be my game of the show? You play as a ride share driver in a dystopian cyberpunk future and are the last human driver. Your friend is wanted by a mega corporation and you need to find her before they do. Conversations in the cab reminded me of the Subsurface games from Mike Bithell, but there are also other aspects such as maintaining a positive driver rating and income. It’s coming out this summer.
  • The Red Lantern will be out later this year and centers around a woman who feels like a failure and finds a sense of purpose racing dogs with the goal of entering the famous Iditarod in Alaska. There are a bunch of unique events, hunting, maintaining your dogs as well as rogue-like elements. But a grizzly bear killed a dog in the trailer which makes me sad.
  • Darkwood will be out in May. It looks to be a twin-stick shooter, horror hybrid where you go out during the day to gather supplies and resources and secure a safehouse at night, reinforcing it to withstand until dawn. There is no linear story path in the game and decisions you make affect the rest of the world.
  • Katana Zero will be released on April 18th and is a very fast 2D ninja action game where the player character can “see into the future” to slow down time and reflect attacks which offsets the fact that you get killed in one hit. There is also a rewind feature? Not super hyped for this.
  • Rad from Double Fine (and published by Bandai Namco?) is a third-person, post-apocalyptic hack and slash game with the hook being that you can mutate to gain different abilities like growing wings or pooping out giant insect versions of yourself to fight alongside you. A definite high point and a game that I’m very excited for coming out this summer.
  • Creature in the Well is a top down action adventure game that includes pinball elements. Apparently pinball elements are the new RPG elements with pinball working in a Metroidvania in last year’s Yoku’s Island Express. You play as the last engineer whose mission is to power up the machine to affect the sandstorm. Hack and slash gameplay, ricocheting energy orbs, eight dungeons, gorgeous artstyle. Summer 2019
  • Bloodroots will be released in summer of 2019 where you play as Mr. Wolf who runs around and kill people with weird combos. It has a very cartoony artstyle and you can kill someone with a carrot.
  • Pine is a third-person, open-world action-adventure game with anthropomorphic animals in armor battling it out. There looks to be only one human left and your choices affect the game world. Scavenging, bartering, crafting and harvesting are keys to survive. It will release in August of 2019.
  • Super Crate Box is coming to Switch next month with multiplayer which is exclusive to the Switch version. Very lo-bit artstyle. Maybe a high score game?
  • Nuclear Throne is out today and has co-op!
  • Ultrabugs will be part of an expanding arcade catalog of games coming to Switch. It is a high score chasing arcade shooter with the play field somewhat reminiscent of Geometry Wars.
  • Swim Sanity will be out Summer 2019. Four player co-op or competitive underwater shooter, looks kind of like Smash Bros. underwater mixed with the Xbox Live Arcade game, Undertow. It will have 150 challenges, eight game modes, five worlds to explore as well as a choice of twin stick controls or motion aiming. It will have support for both online and matchmaking along with in-game voice chat.
  • Blaster Master Zero 2 is available today for $9.99! The first game was one of the more popular games on Switch at launch and it looks like they’ve added more to it.
  • Confirmation that the Stranger Things game will be coming to Switch. Isometric, retro-art brawler and will have local co-op and 12 playable characters from the show. Will release on July 4th, 2019.
  • MASSIVE sale on the eshop. I haven’t see what the discounts are, but I’ll list the games below and if I recommend them.
    • Firewatch (Recommend)
    • Yoku’s Island Express (Heard good things)
    • Blossom Tales (High quality indie Zelda)

    • Moonlighter (have it, need to give it another try)
    • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
  • Lastly was the big announcement of Cadence of Hyrule from the developers from Crypt of the Necrodancer. Looks to be similar in gameplay but set in the Legend of Zelda universe with Link and Zelda as playable characters. It will be coming out in Spring 2019.

And that’s it! My highlights are certainly Neo Cab, Rad, The Red Lantern, Creature in the Well and Pine. The Switch continues to add games that I’m incredibly excited about to their library. Let me know what you’re excited for in the comments below!
